Living room at Lavington

20.08.2006 - Nairobi was our base camp for the time we were there. My father and Rhoda own a house there, which they furnished and set in order for us to get there. They were still working on that when we left, also... It is a beautiful, colonial house, at Lavington, a nice area of Nairobi. The people who stayed there this time were daddy, Rhoda, Ane, Sigurd, Sara, Kristine (friend of Sara's) and Morten ...

Kikoyo wedding

20.08.2006 - But first things first. I arrived together with my dad, Sara, Sigurd and Kristine on a Friday, July 13th. The very next day, we went to a wedding, Kikoyo style, and Sunday morning I finally made it to Nairobi Pentecostal Church, which I had heard so much about. It is a huge church, and the main campus have three services every morning, each with about 2000 people in them. It was great to be ...

Chatting on the lawn

20.08.2006 - Every Sunday after church, there is a family gathering at the Ondeng's house. The four brothers who live in town come to their parent's house with their wifes and kids. It is quite a party! I am so happy I got to experience it at least once, and meet my African family, finally!

At the market

20.08.2006 - Before we went on our travels, we had a few days in Nairobi. We hired a car with a driver, and went around to shopping centers, markets, an elephant orphanage and a giraffe park, among other things. It was fun to seesome of the bustling city, and what it has to offer! We felt safe, even though the city is also known as Nairobbery. We were reasonably careful, but not pananoid, and everything went ...

Ready for safari!

20.08.2006 - Soon we set out on the big SAFARI (Safari means "journey" in Swahili! But has taken on a specific meaning as "going to the savannah to see animals"). We had rented a van and a driver, and drove for a few hours up till Lake Nakuru, home of halv a million pelikans, and other animals, as well. We were lucky and saw both black and white Rhinos, as well as antelopes, baboons, zebras, buffalos and even ...

Masai Warriors

20.08.2006 - After Nakuru we crossed the mountain over to Masai Mara, on roads that were marked by the current rainy season, and we could thank our driver Kamao that we didn't get stuck on the way. In Masai Mara, on of the most famous Safari destinations in the world, we stayed at a cute bush camp called Ilkenani, where we stayed in big tents with built in toilets and hot showers, but there was not alway ...

Lions!

20.08.2006 - In Masai Mara we got to see many of the animals we were hoping for, and that I have heard so much about. We saw tons of different kind of antilopes, zebras, wildebeests (gnus), and even warthogs, chaquals and hyenas, we well as a few elephants, giraffes, cheetas (gepard) and even a family of lions! The only animal we missed from the Big Five was the leopard. We didn't see any hippos, either, ...

Janice!

20.08.2006 - After our safari we had a few days in Nairobi, before "the kids" went to Mombasa. In Nairobi July is the coldest month of the year, also called "winter". It was still like a normal Norwegian summer, with some cooler days, and some nice, sunny days. I went to NPC again on their Sunday service, and after church I met up with my Swahili teacher from Canada, Janice!! She was back home for a few ...

I LOVE THE BEACH!

20.08.2006 - All the "kids" (that is, everyone except daddy and Rhoda) flew off to Mombasa, on the coast, for a few days (five nights) of relaxing fun in the sun. We were booked in an all-inclusive resort on Diani beach, and it was wonderful! We had a bad start, as our plane was overbooked, we we had to wait for four hours at the airport. Well, at least we got free lunch, and a small compensation!

Mombasa ...
